Cover the interior of your smoker with oil that has a high urn point. such as canola. Make sure to cover the WHOLE interior.
Fill a chimney with coals and set them alight with a fire starter.
Once all coals are hot, place them in your firebox.
Open all vents and close the lid allowing the smoker to burn hot for 2-3 hours.
Allow the smoker to cool by safely removing any hot coals.
Once cooled, the smoker is ready to be used for cooking.
